5 apps worth downloading this week

Featuring a relaxing ski down the slopes, instant messaging based around drawings, and new motivation to get all those tasks done.

EACH WEEK, WE highlight five apps that are worth downloading for your smartphone and tablet. There are a lot of apps released on a daily basis, but not all of them are worth paying attention to.

This week features a relaxing ski down the slopes, instant messaging based around drawings, and new motivation to get all those tasks done.

QUICKIE
For: iOS, Android
Cost: Free

- Remember LokLok from a few months ago? If you don’t, it allowed you to draw messages on your lock screen for your friends to see.
- That’s the same principle Quickie follows, except think of it as a way to messages while using GIFs.
- It’s pretty simple to use, and once you read a message, it’s instantly deleted. Also, if you don’t check them within 24 hours, they’re also deleted.
- Although one area that’s worth noting is it requires you to pick your 9 best friends, sending them invites if they’re not using it. That may annoy a few people so just be wary (alternatively, just pick landline numbers if you already have a number of them on your phone).
- However, once you get a few friends on board, you’re going to have a lot of fun with this.

Lumific
For: Android
Cost: Free

- Chances are you take a lot of photos with your phone, but if you’re constantly snapping, then it’s likely that some of them are quite similar.
- Lumific is a smart organiser that groups similar photos together so they’re easier to find, and you have a shorter list to go through.
- Tapping on any group expands them so you can view them again, in case you really need to check them again.
- Selecting a photo will cause it to be automatically enhanced, alongside the usual editing features that are included.
- A useful photo app that’s more than what it appears to be.

Powder – Alpine Simulator
For: iOS
Cost: Free

- We should probably start this off by saying this is an incredibly relaxing game, despite one that gets hard very quickly.
- Power is an endless runner all about skiing, but instead of going from left to right, you’re going down a slope.
- Movement is done by swiping left and right, although you can’t swipe too hard as you will lose control very easily.
- You will crash a lot, but the nature of the game means you won’t mind near as much as you should. You can pay for the privilege of playing as a bear if you want, if you want to support the developer (and to be fair, it is fun to see him crash).
- A fun and relaxing game that is a breeze to play but tough to master.

PhotoScrambler
For: Windows Phone
Cost: Free

- Keeping your photos safe and secure  used to be limited to just your lock screen pin or password. Now there are numerous apps out there that will keep each portion of your phone safe
- As the name suggests, PhotoScrambler protects your images from prying eyes using a number of methods
- You can encode your images, take encoded photos within the app to give them extra protection or add custom codes, colours and descriptions that will scramble your photos if someone tries to access them.
- It isn’t exactly straightforward to use, it’s better to give yourself some time to explore it first before you do anything. It works with your normal photo and cloud services so it’s not entirely isolated.
- Should you need to give your photos an extra layer of security, give it a whirl.

Complete
For: iOS
Cost: Free

- Keeping up new tasks is difficult at the best of times, especially if you set a New Year’s Resolution
- Complete is all about sharing what you need to get done, and getting motivation from friends, family and strangers.
- By sharing any task you need to get done, people can help you out and you can return the favour as well.
- For those worried about having to share everything, there’s a private mode included so you only have to share the tasks you need help or motivation for.
- Should you need a regular boost for certain tasks, it might be useful to have this on the go.
