5 shows to look out for on Sky

Fancy a breakdown of the best new shows and returning series? We’ve got you covered.

IT’S JUST ABOUT that time of year again.

That’s right – summer is winding down and longer evenings with a fire, blankets on the couch (as you catch up on your stories) beckon.

In order for you to get a proper run-up at what autumn has to offer for telly, we’ve compiled the TV shows that you’ll want to binge on in the coming months.

1. The Leftovers

Tuesdays at 9pm, Sky Atlantic

This massively-anticipated show comes from the co-creator of head-wrecking mega-series Lost, Damon Lindelof. The Leftovers is just as much of an enigmatic roller-coaster as Lost was – it follows the story of those who were left behind after 2 per cent of the world’s population just disappears. Look out for Liv Tyler and Just Theroux in the trailer, below.

2. The Blacklist

Starts 3 October, 9pm Sky Living

James Spader got a Best Actor nomination at the Golden Globes for his performance as Raymond “Red” Reddington. A notorious fugitive, Reddington turns himself in to the FBI revealing that he has put together a blacklist of dangerous terrorists that he wants their assistance in tracking down. Critics raved about the first season, so now’s the time to jump on the bandwagon.

3. Boardwalk Empire

Saturdays at 9pm, Sky Atlantic

The new series of Boardwalk Empire has finally arrived, and considering last season’s thrilling finale, there’s still much to resolve. Steve Buscemi is fantastic as always, having already taken home a Best Actor Golden Globe for his turn as Nucky Thompson. The stakes are high as he tries to eliminate the competition  once and for all. Plus – amazing period costumes and sets. What’s not to love?

4. The Knick

Starting in October, Sky Atlantic.

The Knick is set to be the next big show, with Hollywood heavyweights Steven Soderbergh and Clive Owen taking the director seat and lead role. Set in the Knickerbocker Hospital in 1900, it focuses on Dr. John Thackery (Owen), who must overcome severe medical limitations and a lack of funding while also battling a cocaine and opium addiction. Good Lord, this show sounds amazing.

5. Fortitude

Starting January 2015, Sky Atlantic

Anyone that grew up in a small town will tell you how quickly bad news travels. In the Arctic town of Fortitude, which has never had a violent crime, a gruesome murder threatens to tear the community apart. There’s been some good buzz about this one, and they’ve put together a great cast (Michael Gambon, Stanley Tucci, Christopher Ecclestone). Fans of a good mystery should be on notice.
