5 things we didn't want to do after school

Were YOU forced into Irish dancing lessons as a child? Our sympathies.

RIVERDANCE IS BACK.

And they’re attempting to break a Guinness World Record. This Sunday the 21st of July, over 2000 will gather arm-in-arm in a bid to break the World Record for Longest Riverdance Line.

It got us thinking about our own histories with the demon dance – hours spent practising after school. What other nightmare scenarios were we forced into as kids? Let’s relive the horror together. Hold hands, it might get rough.

1. Irish dancing

Being roared at in the lessons was bad enough, but then there was the public humiliation of the competitions. The ringlets, the dresses, the socks, the shoes. This was one after-school activity that had a lot of accessories. Emotional baggage included.

2. Piano

The lesson itself wasn’t so bad. It was the endless PRACTICE that our parents forced us into that really took the biscuit. Not to mention being wheeled out at family parties to string together a few notes.

3. Speech and drama

This one is contender for the worst. Not only did it combine public speaking but also LEARNING STUFF OFF. Save that stuff for school, guys.

4. Scouts/Girl Guides

Oh yeah. Organised fun. That’s exactly what kids love, right?

5. French

Again, save this stuff for school. First, homework comes in to wreck playtime, then more learning? No thanks.

What after school activities did you just DESPISE as a child? And do you still have your Irish dancing medals at home?
