American Youtubers have been watching Versatile's music videos and they're seriously confused

“Guys, tell me. What is ‘brown’? Is that a weed substance?”

IT’S SAFE TO say that Dublin hip hop duo Versatile are fairly controversial. There’s plenty of valid criticism to be made about the lyrical content of their songs, yet they’re packing out tents at Electric Picnic and have sold out a headliner in the Olypmia next month.

Regardless of how you feel about rappers Eskimo Supreme and Casper Walsh, one thing that unites us all is our fascination at non-Irish Youtubers trying to get their heads around the goings-on in a typical Versatile music video.

A common theme in almost every one of these reaction videos, is that the person watching the video has no idea what Versatile are talking about, but just nods along and says something about the beat being “awesome”.

Firstly, let’s take a look at this guy in a pair of aviators and an army uniform.

This screenshot sums up how Youtube user LunaWolfMXS felt for the duration of Versatile’s video for ‘Ketamine’.

If you are familiar with the song ‘Ketamine’, you’ll know that there’s a bit where the Versatile lads are sitting at an after-party and Eskimo Supreme is growing increasingly uncomfortable about the mindless ranting of some guy from Santry:

It’s about 20 past 3, some youngfella’s sitting beside me / he lives down Santry, won’t stop talking ever since he met me / I wanna leave, but he won’t let me / He’s talking palm trees, jet skis, it’s starting to affect me / This c**t is burning the ears off me.

It quickly becomes clear that if this Youtuber was anyone at an aftersesh, he’d be the guy from Santry burning the ears off a randomer. That’s because halfway through his reaction video, he stood up and started looking around his room for euro notes to prove that he had some of the currency in his room.

He spent a considerable amount of time doing this, all while knocking down chairs and mistakenly holding up other foreign currencies to the camera. When he sits back down, he says that he has no idea what’s going on in the video. We can’t imagine why that is.

In one review, Youtube user RudeReviews watches the music video for ‘Dublin City G’s’.

This isn’t their most shocking video visually, but lyrically it’s easily one of the more problematic ones. However, this guy doesn’t seem to mind, mostly because he hasn’t got a clue what they’re talking about.

I heard it’s a little bit rough out there in Dublin. It’s a little hood out there in Dublin, I heard.

Again, this guy doesn’t really get what’s going on and just nods away for most of the song before pleading with his subscribers to supply him with some translations of Irish slang in the comment section.

Youtuber Bill The Goat shared his reaction to Versatile’s song ‘We Sell Brown’.

Bill The Goat is a big fan of Versatile, although he admits he doesn’t understand them in the slightest. He has reacted to all of their music videos, including ‘We Sell Brown’. This reaction video begins about 2:00 in, and at 3:30 Bill The Goat says “Guys, tell me. What is ‘brown’? Is that a weed substance? What is that?”

Brown, if you are unaware, is slang for heroin. Without understanding that basic level of the song, it’s fairly weird alright.
