Archive Dog Auditioning for Film of the Day

DOES THIS LOOK like the scene at your breakfast table this morning? We hope not.

This picture of “The Duke of Kenilworth II”, a ten-month-old boxer pup, was taken in February 1957. Want to know what’s going on there? Read the original caption from the AP Photo archives:

The Duke of Kenilworth II likes his bagels, lox and cream cheese, all kosher style, and Sheldon Blank, whose father owns the dog, says that qualifies the pup for a role in the film version of “Pal Joey” in Philadelphia, Feb. 19, 1957. Hollywood Director George Sidney sounded a call for a dog who likes kosher food, to play the part in the film. But while the whole thing may be a publicity stunt, the Duke still might not qualify. He also eats bacon and eggs.

We couldn’t tell you if he got the part but we can tell you that the dog knows how to sport a bib.

The musical movie Pal Joey starred Frank Sinatra, Rita Hayworth and Kim Novak. (It’s where the number  ‘That’s Why The Lady Is a Tramp’ came from.) We like Frank Sinatra’s intro to the film – but it would have been better with the inclusion of a certain ten-month-old boxer pup:
