BONO AND THE Edge have both cast doubt on the future of U2 in an interview previewing the forthcoming re-release of Achtung Baby.
Frontman Bono has in particular questioned the future of the band in an interview with Rolling Stone ahead of the re-release of Achtung Baby, the 1991 album which marked a shift in the musical direction of the band to a more alternative, edgier sound.
Bono admits that talk of not being so sure the band has a future has annoyed The Edge, Larry Mullen, and Adam Clayton who have told him to “shut up about being irrelevant” but he does say “We’d be very pleased to end on No Line on the Horizon,” before adding: “I doubt that.”
Guitarist The Edge has done little to dampen speculation by saying: “It’s quite likely you might hear from us next year, but it’s equally possible that you won’t.”
The Irish Daily Mirror leads with the story on its frontpage today but the likelyhood of the rumours becoming reality appears less than certain given Bono said at last month’s Toronto Film Festival that the band would be together until the end of their days.
U2 Now and Then quotes him as having said at the time: “We’re unemployable, you know, it’s like the priesthood, there’s only one way out, in a coffin.”
