A bride and groom had a lovely impromptu first dance on Shop Street in Galway

THE WEATHER MIGHT have turned to shite around the country in the last day or so, but last weekend Ireland was still basking in relatively decent mid-April temperatures.

And Galway’s Shop Street on Friday was bathed in sunshine.

As the Dermot and Dave show on Today FM discovered, Kate Divilly and Declan Tannam were lucky enough to be getting married in the city centre. As the wedding party made their way through town to return to the hotel a band was busking, as usual, in the middle of the street.

So they had an impromptu first dance there and then

Glorious.

Speaking to Dermot and Dave this morning, chief bridesmaid Aoife Doyle gave a blow-by-blow account of what happened:

The wedding went really well, it was beautiful, and then Kate decided when we were walking back to the hotel to take the busier route down Shop Street. The eight of us [bridesmaids and groomsmen included] were walking down Shop Street and the sun came out and it was absolutely gorgeous.

It was then that they came across the band:

We were walking past a band and everyone was clapping at us and taking pictures and then the band spotted us. We were saying ‘play Galway Girl’ because Kate is from Galway and they kind of looked at us and went ‘we don’t know that one’
They were kind of an alternative band – beatboxes and stuff – so we walked on for another minute and they called us back in. Kate and Declan went into the crowd and it was then that they had their first dance.

They had quite the circle around them when the whole wedding party joined in too

What a memorable first dance.

Aoife told Dermot and Dave that the tourists were suitably impressed:

On the street there were actually so many Americans that were absolutely stunned by what was going on – they just couldn’t believe it that this is what Irish people do.

It wouldn’t be a regular occurrence now – but you’re liable to see anything on Shop Street on a fine Friday afternoon.
