12 of the weirdest celebrity TV cameos

Remember when Boy George was in The A-Team?

TO SAY ED Sheeran’s Game Of Thrones cameo this week got a mixed reaction would be an understatement.

So much so, that the poor singer deleted his Twitter account following the backlash.

Ed is not the first – and probably won’t be the last – celebrity to flex his acting chops in a beloved television series.

Many a rom-com has been threatened with derailment because of an ill-timed celeb slot – here are some of the most bizarre ones …

1. Stephen Fry in Ros Na Rún

In fairness, we have to commend him for actually doing some work for this appearance and learning Irish.

And also, he wasn’t doing this for the craic – the cameo was part of the actor and writer’s documentary series Planet Word for the BBC.

Still though, weird enough seeing him ends up in Tigh Thaidhg all the same.

2. Britney Spears – How I Met Your Mother

One of the most hyped celebrity cameos ever, Britney joined the likes of Heidi Klum and Enrique Iglesias by popping up on the Tesco-equivalent of Friends.

Britters played Abby, one of Barney’s many conquests featured on the show, and came around the time the singer was starting to turn her life around.

Interestingly enough though, Neil Patrick Harris, who plays Barney, was against the cameo.

“I’m in the minority that our show does not need stunt casting in order to succeed,” Harris declared during a break from taping.

Miaow!

3. Prince in New Girl

Imagine loving a show so much and then wangling yourself a cameo on it.

Enter, Prince.

Prince plays himself (because who else would The Purple One play?) in the episode. 26 million people tuned in to see if Prince can salvage Jess and Nick’s relationship after he says I love you, and she doesn’t say it back.

Apparently though, he only agreed to come on board with the show … If the Kardashians didn’t.

4. Michael Palin in Home And Away

No, seriously.

The Monty Python star played a British surfer who was deathly afraid of sharks on the hit Aussie soap opera.

Can we also hold him single-handedly responsible for breaking up Donald and Marilyn?

(Definitely not).

5. Lily Allen in Neighbours

Karl Kennedy is a creep.

THERE. I SAID IT.

6. Ian McKellan in Coronation Street

Ian McKellan, AKA Gandalf, played a con artist after old Blanche’s heart.

Not really a cameo, considering he hung around the cobbles for three weeks. Wonder if he’ll ever reprise the role?

7. Boy George in The A-Team

The Season 4 episode, ‘Cowboy George’, opens with Face working on a new get-rich-quick scheme for the team: he’s booking a concert with Cowboy George and the Range Rats at an Arizona watering hole, and pocketing the profits.

It’s also the episode which coined the phrase “English glitter prince”. So there you go.

8. Boris Johnson in Eastenders

Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, starred in EastEnders in 2009 as himself when character Peggy Mitchell ran for local election.

His appearance wasn’t without criticism though, and the BBC released a statement at the time reading: “Boris Johnson makes a cameo appearance in EastEnders as part of the storyline where Peggy Mitchell stands as an independent candidate in a fictional local election.”

His appearance is compatible both with BBC editorial guidelines and the principle of due impartiality”

9. Michelle Obama in iCarly

Michelle Obama seemed to just be constantly up for the craic while acting in her role as First Lady.

No surprise then, that she decided to crop up on one of the most popular kids’ shows of the ’00s.

The episode came as Nickelodeon paired up with the White House to support military families.

10. Justin Bieber in CSI

CSI has had a rake of celebs guest star on the series – but the Biebs got to feature twice.

Bieber appeared on Season 11’s premiere, as well as episode 15, where he is shot several times in the chest in the slowest of slow-motion.

11. Larry David in The Hannah Montana Show

Safe to say this went over every pre-teen’s head at the time of airing.

In an episode during the show’s second season, Hannah ran into Seinfeld co-creator Larry David in a restaurant.

Despite arriving later, Miss Montana ends up seated first, with an additional table put out specifically for her, while Larry has to wait in line, grumbling and griping

The cameo came about because the Curb Your Enthusiasm star’s daughters were obsessed with the show.

12. Paris Hilton in Supernatural

The Sweet Life star reunited with Jared Padalecki, her co-star in the widely panned horror flick House Of Wax on the long-running fantasy series.

Paris played a demonic creature that takes the form of … Paris Hilton.
