Wanderlust

This woman 'quit her life' to go travelling, and now her story is inspiring the internet

Claira Hermet’s story will give you extreme wanderlust.

MEET CLAIRA HERMET.

In January 2015, Hermet made headlines when she spoke out about getting a preventative double mastectomy.

Hermet elected for the surgery having lost both her mother and older sister to breast cancer, and discovering that she was a carrier of the BRCA1 gene mutation.

Ahead of her surgery, the television presenter held a Goodbye Boobs party and bid farewell to her breasts.

One year later and Hermet is now travelling around the world solo having sold her belongings and moved out of her flat.

I have decided to sell my belongings, pack up all my stuff, move out of my flat, leave my family, friends and work behind to go traveling for 8 months ON MY OWN. I am literally quitting my life.

Hermet wrote on her blog that the surgery and the deaths of her mother and sister sparked a “a need, a want and a desire” to go travelling. That’s when My Life Your Hands was born.

You see, Hermet is not just travelling the world — she’s actually letting people on the internet decide what she does and where she goes.

In order to make my trip unique I’m asking for your help. Although the continents and some countries I’m visiting are already decided the rest is up to you. I want to know where, how and who to go visit. I want to know the things I should avoid and the things I CAN NOT miss. I’m relying on you to submit your ideas below. Out of the suggested options you will be able to vote on where, how or whom I should go visit next.

And so far it’s working out pretty well.

She’s been to Rio.

She’s attended a carnival in Trinidad.

Hiked volcanoes in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

And, of course, freed the nipple on top of a Brazilian mountain.

You could say she’s living the dream.

She’s described the whole thing as a “rollercoaster of laughter, tears, excitement, fear, friendship and love,” and she’s still got six months left to go.

Up next for her is Argentina.

We aren’t jealous at all.
