Mastering the Coke and Fanta yoyos was one of Irish childhood's key skills

Around the world.

TIP THE CAN, Kerbs and elastics were all staples of an Irish estate growing up.

But one activity that you didn’t need a green for was cracking out the yoyo.

And the Coke and Fanta ones were the best

You’d collect up wrappers and tokens to get your hands on them

And if you really wanted to go all out, you could collect up for the GOLD one

Then there were the tricks:

Walk the dog, rocking the cradle, the sleeper and the around the world

And mastering at least some tricks was crucial

Even looking at the old school Coke yoyos will bring back some memories

Not forgetting the Sprite ones – although they were marginally less cool

There were competitions that people would enter – but most people just did it for the craic in the playground

Because at the time yoyos were legitimately cool

And if you were thrown one now, you’d probably get back in the groove pretty quickly

Skills that stay with you for life.
