A recent study published in The Journals of Gerontology has found that couples who drink together report happier marriages. No, really.
The authors of the study examined the drinking patterns of older married couples and whether or not it had a positive or negative impact on their relationships.
Participants were quizzed about their drinking habits and asked questions about their marriage and spouses.
The results found that couples who drank together tended to be happier than couples who did not drink together. In particular, women reported dissatisfaction if their husbands abstained from drinking.
Concordant drinking couples reported decreased negative marital quality over time, and these links were significantly greater among wives. Wives who reported drinking alcohol reported decreased negative marital quality over time when husbands also reported drinking and increased negative marital quality over time when husbands reported not drinking.
Study author Kira Birditt told Reuters Health that they couldn’t quite explain the phenomenon, but speculated that couples who drink together likely engage in more “leisure time activities together,” which could contribute to a happier marriage.
