THE FIRST SERIES of Derry Girls wrapped up last night.

The episode saw Erin take over the reins of the school paper after the previous editor pulls out of school due to illness.

The team quit in solidarity with her, leaving Erin scrambling for story ideas.

Article ideas ranged from ‘animals’ to ‘shoes of the world’. Ground-breaking.

However, when Erin stumbles upon a box of entries for a storywriting competition, she decides to steal a story and run it as the paper’s own. The story in question? An anonymous tale detailing one student’s desire to come out as a lesbian.

However, when Sister Michael prohibits them from running the story, Erin decides to do it anyway – much to Clare’s seemingly unexplained despair.

The end of the series saw the girls supporting Orla at the school talent show, as she does step aerobics to Like A Prayer. (No, seriously).

However, it was the closing scene that had everyone all emotional, as Erin’s family watched in horror as news of a bombing broke on the television.

People reckon the writers perfectly captured how it felt at the time.

The soundtrack of The Cranberries made it extra poignant.

Let’s not even talk about Grandad putting his hand on Gerry’s shoulder.

Bawling.

People are already desperate for season two to air.

We’re counting the days already.

Edit: Writer Lisa McGee told the Radio Times that the bombing depicted in the show wasn’t based on “any particular incident”, saying: “it was just something at that scale.”
