Ed Sheeran makes history as he is crowned the world's best-selling recording artist for 2017

He’s hit the record books.

ED SHEERAN WOULD be hard-pressed to look back on 2017 with anything but the utmost contentment.

Having simultaneously occupied nine positions in the UK singles charts, secured the Christmas Number 1 and gotten engaged to long-term girlfriend, Cherry Seaborn, 2017 was pretty good to ol’ Ed.

But it seems 2017 isn’t done giving.

According to emerging reports today, it has been confirmed that the Shape Of You singer was the world’s best-selling recording artist last year.

Global music-industry trade organization, International Federation of the Phonographic Industry, has revealed that Ed’s third album, Divide, was certified multi-platinum in 36 markets, while single, Shape Of You, boasts the same in 32.

These figures, which include digital, CD and vinyl formats, place the Suffolk-native in the record books as it is the first time an IFPI Global Recording Artist of the Year has had both the bestselling album and bestselling single of the year.

Paying tribute to the 27-year-old, IFPI chief executive, Frances Moore, said it would be difficult to underestimate the impact Ed has had on the music industry since his debut single back in 2011.

It’s wonderful to be able to announce Ed Sheeran as the IFPI Global Recording Artist 2017. The success Ed has achieved is astonishing and testament to his ability to write and perform songs that connect with a truly global fanbase.

Commenting on the milestone moment, Max Lousada, CEO of Recorded Music for Warner Music Group & Chairman and CEO of Warner Music UK, said the success is testament to Ed’s drive and determination.

Being crowned the biggest star in the world, with the biggest song and biggest album, is the result of years of ambition, creativity, and hard work on a global scale.
Congrats also to Stuart Camp, the Atlantic teams in the UK and US, and everyone at Warner who contributed to Ed’s amazing success story.
