Young Cork teacher (25) killed in Alps hiking accident

Eoin Deasy died while hiking an Alpine route on Thursday. His body was located the following day by a mountain rescue team.

FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS ARE being put in place, following the death of a 25-year-old student from Cork in a hiking accident in Liechtenstein.

Eoin Deasy died while out hiking an Alpine route alone last Thursday.

He had been living in Switzerland with his girlfriend, Maria, and teaching at a school there for the past year.

It’s understood he had been in contact with family members before setting out on the trip.

His body was located on Friday by a mountain rescue team.

A family member flew out over the weekend to identify the 25-year-old’s body, and funeral arrangements are currently being put in place.

Eoin, who was from the southside Cork suburb of Ballinlough, was a graduate of UCC.

President of UCC Student’s Union Padraig Haughney said he expected a memorial service would be held at the college in the next few weeks.

“Our sympathies go out to Eoin’s family, his girlfriend and all of his friends,” Haughney said.

“This is a very sad time for his family.”

A spokesperson for the Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed that consular assistance was being provided to the Deasy family.
