THE PRACTICE OF promoting a party on Facebook could soon be banned in Germany after a string of gatherings got out of control.
Politicians want a ban imposed because of the threat to “public order and security” reports Der Spiegel. Last month around 1600 people showed up to a party in Hamburg after a teenager accidentally listed her 16th birthday party as a public event.
A number of politicians are backing calls for a ban, but others say that criminalising the events cannot be justified, and that bans should be imposed on a case by case basis.
The Telegraph reports that Germany reports 19 million Facebook users. Critics of the proposed legislation are asking how such a large number of potential party planners could be policed.
Lower Saxony’s interior minister Uwe Schunemann has suggested introducing ‘internet driving licences’ order to educate young people off the pitfalls of social networking.
