AS WE ALL know by now, Kanye West is basically the Marmite of music — you either love him or hate him.

In the past, Liam Gallagher has branded him “utter s***” while the late Lou Reed described his musical output as “majestic and inspiring”.

See? Marmite.

The latest musician to weigh in on Kanye is Blur guitarist Graham Coxon.

In an interview with The Guardian, Coxon was lamenting the state of modern music and when the interviewer brought up Kanye, Coxon did not hold back.

He’s a f***ing idiot, isn’t he? Does he even make his own albums? People aren’t interested in learning instruments and putting effort and time into it. They want it immediately. It’s McDonalds, isn’t it? It’s convenient. But all I hear is a loop starting, some bloke starts to sing or rap, and the loop finishes. There’s no shape to this stuff. And the lyrics just seem to be idiotic.

Much like everything related to Kanye West, Coxon’s comments have divided opinion.

There were some who agreed with Coxon…

And many more who didn’t.

The comments also inspired a number of opinion pieces on the matter.

Christopher Hooton of The Independent was pretty dismissive of Coxon’s comments…

You know what the world really needs? Another white dude dismissing Kanye West’s ouvre out of hand and moaning about how it isn’t “proper music”.

While Noisey accused Coxon (and Blur) of being “culturally blind” and wondered if he had ever even listened to a Kanye West album.

Because Kanye West doesn’t play a guitar, people like Graham think he doesn’t make his own albums. But he does! He’s released seven of them: all have won awards. Kanye’s one of the few rappers to successfully create the music and words on his records; as a result he’s the most award-winning Grammy artist of his age. Not only does Kanye createmusic though, he has inspired its future. Graham: What have Blur influenced? The NME Magazine? Topman?

Kanye West has not responded, but we somehow don’t think he’ll really pay any attention to it.
