KYLIE JENNER ONLY turned 21 last week but at times it feels like she is wise beyond her years.
The reality TV show star turned make-up mogul was just 19 years old when she became pregnant last summer with Travis Scott, her boyfriend of only a couple of weeks. Kylie, whose career and success has been built on chronicling the everyday occurrences of her daily life through the medium of TV, Snapchat and Instagram, did the unthinkable.
She went off the grid.
As one of the top ten most followed celebrities on Instagram, her silence social media created huge noise.
Sources claimed she was pregnant and so began months of speculation of ‘is she/isn’t she’, and the question on everyone’s ‘Candy K’ coated lips was if she was pregnant, why was she hiding it?
And in an interview with her sister Kendall for Australian Vogue, Kylie has revealed the sagacious reason behind her retreat from the public eye:
I knew that it would be better for us, if me and Stormi just stayed kind of low-key. Your hormones are going crazy and your emotions are more heightened, and I just felt like I wasn’t prepared.
With many in the public eye afraid to ever admit feelings of vulnerability, her candid confession of feeling unprepared for motherhood is refreshingly honest.
I just knew that it would be better for me, and I could enjoy the whole experience if I did it privately. I just felt like it was a sacred special moment and I wasn’t ready to share it with everybody. I just wanted to keep that to myself.
Kylie really revealed a deep and introspective aspect to her nature. Not many stars that young would have the presence of mind to take time to sit back and just experience the journey of motherhood alone in the era of constant sharing and updates.
I had a really good time, and I feel like that’s why Stormi is so calm and so happy, because I was so calm and so happy.
When she did stage her social media comeback, Kylie did so with a bang and a flourish.
Kylie announced her pregnancy in a hugely dramatic, sped-up video that chronicled her pregnancy journey.
At last count, the Instagram video had 95 million views.
In the era of oversharing, which the Kardashians have made their fortunes on, Kylie became even more bankable and ‘followable’ for period of scarcity. Proof that the ultimate move is playing hard to get?
