What's in my makeup bag? Jamie Donnelly

Having a rummage through some of our favourite faces’ wares.

Each week, we’ll be taking a peek into some of our faves’ makeup bags to see their must-have products, because we’re nosey. This week, it’s the turn of MAC Cosmetics makeup artist Jamie Donnelly.

His earliest makeup memories

“My earliest memory with makeup is actually scribbling on the back of a large freestanding mirror with a lipstick, but that was for entirely different reasons.

“My personal interest came from a guy called Josh who used to post on YouTube with the handle “Petrilude”. He had looks that included bold colours and textures that I thought were the business! I was about 15 when I came across his videos and from there I became a convert to following social media artists. I found myself on Instagram following many of them once it became a larger platform and it’s still somewhere I go for inspiration almost daily.”

My own makeup tends to be inspired by more grungy and alternative artists like Jamie Genevieve and Belle Jordan. I love a good smudged, lived in smokey eye!”

His makeup bag and what’s inside

“I’ll start with skin! I love spending time improving skin and making it look as naturally flawless as possible. My go-to bases are MAC Studio Waterweight and Urban Decay Naked Skin.

“Waterweight offers a really light texture with sheer to medium coverage and a natural, slightly dewy finish. This is the ultimate “skin-like” foundation for me and I love how it wears through the day! If I need a bit more coverage and a matte finish I’ll reach for UD.”

“The Urban Decay Naked Skin concealer is my new go-to for brightening under my eyes and erasing any redness or blemishes. The finish is gorgeous and it actually wears on my skin for the entire day, which keeps me happy.”

“Once I have my skin tone evened out and I don’t look like a bog creature, I tend to stick to quite neutral tones to sculpt rather than adding anything too colourful.”

“I physically cannot show you the inside of my Tom Ford Shade & Illuminate because you’ll have a stroke! It’s so beloved that it’s been through the wars with me, the cream highlight is just THE perfect sheer, glossy sheen that doesn’t add weight or chunky sparkle to the skin. I live in this stuff.

“For contouring I’ll use MAC Harmony blusher, the cooler taupe colour being a fantastic contour shade for paler skins.

Benefit Hoola is always around to add a bit more warmth should I need it. The lack of heavy warm tones in it makes it ideal for my lighter-than-light pink toned Irish skin.

“Lastly, my key eye pieces – MAC Painterly Paint Pot is something that I rarely do my makeup without. It’s long wearing, the tone brightens my eye lid to keep colours true-to-pan and I can whack it on in about 2 seconds. It’s foolproof.”

“For my brows I like to use some Benefit Goof Proof pencil just to add in a slight bit of shape before I apply MAC ProLongwear Waterproof Brow Set in Ebony Brown. The pencil is lovely for soft definition and the brow set is exactly what it says on the tin. The colour makes my brows look instantly huge which I adore!

“The last little treasure is something I found recently and it’s literally made doing my eyes instantaneous. MAC Modern Twist Kajal liners are really creamy propelling eyeliners, but they’re waterproof so they last all day. I started using Long Espresso which is a deep brown that has slightly cool tones to it. I adore this buffed really low under the eye with any kind of sheen on the lid and tons of mascara.”

“I don’t have a go to mascara for you because I’m a mascara hoarder and can’t pick! MAC False Lashes Extreme Black and In Extreme Dimension are two of my favourites but I’m partial to a Benefit They’re Real! at times.

I’m a bit of a product slut in that regard, sorry!”

“For lips I rarely wear colour. If I do it’s usually a tinted lip balm or a super sheer lipstick just to add texture and little bit of colour to make my face look complete. Carmex is my best friend but I actually can’t find mine at the moment. Time for a re-up.
