A MAN WHO was attacked by a shark while swimming reacted by fighting it off, stitching up his own wounds, then going for a beer.
James Grant, 24, was spearfishing off Colac Bay in New Zealand last Saturday when he felt a tug on his leg, news.com.au reports. He turned around to see the shark.
Grant said he got a “bit of a shock”, but then began to stab at the shark with his knife, thinking:
Bugger, now I have to try and get this thing off my leg.
He managed to fight the shark off, then went back to the shore where he discovered bites in his leg up to 5cm long, the Guardian reports. (He believes it was a sevengill shark that attacked him.)
So Grant – a junior doctor – stitched himself up. He and his friends then went for a beer in a nearby tavern, where staff gave him a bandage from the first aid kit because he was dripping blood on the floor.
After relaxing with a cold one, Grant went to Invercargill hospital to have the stitching finished off, he told the BBC.
