There, that’s out of the way.

Now, let’s take a trip down memory lane – to the biggest twists, turns, shocks and unexpected left-field plot developments in cinematic history…

1. The Sixth Sense, 1999

The Sixth Sense was a smash hit when it came out in the late 1990s, and the buzz was all about the shocking twist. Did you see it coming when you watched it? And were you one of the hordes of cinema-goers repeating Haley Joel Osment’s iconic line afterwards?

A modern-day Jekyll and Hyde story, based on the original Chuck Palahniuk novel of the same name. Brad Pitt at is what is arguably his finest, and Ed Norton similarly on form. Did you guess the twist before it emerged?

4. Planet of the Apes, 1968

Sent up since its release, almost everyone knows the twist to the tale in Planet of the Apes. With all the prequels and reboots in the last 20 years, you’d be hard pressed not to know at this stage.

Twist: It was Earth all along. Ham it up there, Heston. Good lad. “Goddamn you! Goddamn you all to hell!”

6. The Empire Strikes Back, 1980

This one barely counts as a spoiler any more, with the storyline well-known to even the small few of us who have managed to avoid the film itself.

Twist: Darth Vader is Luke’s father. Often misquoted as “Luke, I am your father” but it’s actually “No, I am your father”. So there ya go.

7. The Game, 1997

The best kind of twist? The one that just keeps going…and going… and going. You’re never quite sure where the truth begins and The Game stops. Genius. You’re just as baffled as Michael Douglas.
