WE ONLY KNOW about American high schools from a steady diet of teen movies but this story is something that would totally happen in one of them.
Students of Missouri’s Hickman High School spent plenty of time working on their yearbook this year but one student decided to have a little too much fun with one of the pages.
Raigan Mastain had her name changed to “masturbate” and the cheeky re-write made it into 720 copies of the yearbook.
Tracey Conrad, the student alleged to have changed the name, was then arrested.
According to the Columbia Daily Tribune she was arrested on suspicion of
first-degree property damage, a felony, and harassment
There were concerns about the cost of reprinting so many yearbooks which would been around $41,000.
Instead the yearbook staff spent over 12 hours (!) putting stickers over Mastain’s name to correct it.
Mastain definitely comes out of this looking really sound though, telling the Columbia Daily Tribune:
I was kind of annoyed. It was stupid, but I wasn’t that upset
She says she was shocked that Conrad was arrested but it shows that “when you’re in high school, you do stuff that is not necessarily the smartest”.
That is definitely something someone would say on Dawson’s Creek. Amazing.
Mastain points out that she wasn’t friends with Conrad but she reckons:
What she did wasn’t right, but I don’t think it should affect her for the rest of her life
Ultimately her concern is mainly on the Hickman High yearbook which was said to be a labour of love for the committee this year, using iconic photos and recreations of them to give the graduating class a fitting send off.
If we were doing our own Daily Edge yearbook we would definitely give Raigan Mastain the Girl Most Likely To Be Really Sound About Someone Changing Their Name in the Yearbook award.
