Turns out a lot of people binge-watched House of Cards last weekend

A new study found that between 5 – 15 per cent of Netflix’s 44 million subscribers sampled at least one episode from the show last weekend.

NETFLIX’S DECISION TO release all the episodes of its original shows at once seems to be paying off, at least for House of Cards.

A new study from analytics company Procera Networks found that two per cent of US Netflix subscribers finished the second season of House of Cards over its debut weekend.

Considering it has 33.42 million members in the US, this would amount to 668,400. In comparison, only one percent of European subscribers did the same.

Between six to ten per cent of US and European subscribers watched at least one episode of the show. European audiences watched more episodes than their US counterparts overall. On average, European viewer watched five episodes compared to three in the US.

The other interesting aspect of its findings was despite the launch, there was no real change in traffic when the show launched. This would suggest that instead of new shows seeing an increase in traffic, a new release means current viewers focus on a specific show.

Netflix doesn’t disclose viewership data so confirming the exact figures isn’t possible, but Procera says it worked with a number of broadband networks around the world to help compile the results, and has covered Netflix a lot in the past.

What’s encouraging for Netflix is between 5 – 15 per cent of its subscribers sampled at least one episode from the show.

Since Netflix announced it has just over 44 million members, this could mean that between 2 – 6 million sampled an episode last weekend, and considering more people watched the second season than the first, it’s good news for the company.
