TAOISEACH ENDA KENNY may not have made quite the impression he wanted while meeting American politician Paul Ryan during his recent visit to the US to celebrate St Patrick’s weekend.
Ryan, who was the Republican vice presidential nominee in the 2012 US election, yesterday tweeted that he was “honored” (that is the American spelling) to meet Kenny last week. So far so good.
Unfortunately for the Taoiseach, Ryan misspelled his first name – referring to him as ‘Edna’.
This is not the first time Kenny has been publicly referred to as Edna in America.
Following the 2011 General Election, the New York Times and Reuters both made the mistake. The article in the Times went one step further and also changed Kenny’s gender, referring to him as “Ms. Kenny”.
The reporter behind the piece, Sarah Lyall, contacted TheJournal.ie at the time to apologise for the error, blaming it on a sub-editor.
Ryan has not yet commented on the mistake.
