Fans mourn death of Pogues guitarist Philip Chevron

The musician announced earlier this year that he was terminally ill with cancer.

PHIL CHEVRON, THE longtime guitarist of the Pogues, has died.

Chevron (born Philip Ryan) was treated for neck and head cancer in 2007. Sadly, he announced earlier this year that the cancer had returned, following a period where he had been given a clean bill of health.

Today, a short post on the official Pogues website stated that Chevron had died:

The musician, who was also a member of Radiators in Space, said in a statement on the same website in May that a new tumour had been found but that its position meant he was not advised to have treatment.

Describing the cancer as “lethal”, the 56-year-old Chevron said at the time that it wasn’t possible to measure his life expectancy.

In July, Irish musicians and writers – including Roddy Doyle and Chevron’s bandmate Shane MacGowan – took part in a special gig to honour him at the Olympia Theatre.

Chevron had taken a break from performing since his 2012 diagnosis.

Today, fans and fellow musicians took to Twitter to pay their tributes to the Dubliner:

Garry Hynes, Artistic Director of Druid Theatre Company, also spoke of her sadness over Chevron’s death, saying:

Philip Chevron collaborated with Druid on the music for our production of The Silver Tassie. But more than that he was a great personal friend. I’m not sure anyone knew more about theatre than he did. He was passionate about live theatre especially musicals. He had great insight, wisdom and personal warmth. Like so many others I will miss him very much.
