Police called over 'offensive flag'... that turned out to be European

The incident took place in Rory McIlroy’s hometown of Holywood.

POLICE IN CO Down were called to investigate an ‘offensive’ flag – only to discover it was a European flag.

The incident occurred in golfer Rory McIlroy’s home town of Holywood and the BBC reports that it was put up by a resident to celebrate Europe’s Ryder Cup win.

In a statement to TheJournal.ie, the PSNI said:

Police in Holywood attended an address in the Woodlands area yesterday, Sunday 28 September following the report from a member of the public that a flag they believed to be offensive had been erected. Police attended and no offence was detected.

Instead of an offensive flag, police found a European flag.

Europe won the Ryder Cup yesterday at Gleneagles, beating the United States.
