Suarez was menacing on his Barcelona debut. Cordon Press Spain
AS IT HAPPENED

As it happened: Real Madrid vs Barcelona, El Clasico

Luis Suarez is making his debut in the most exciting circumstances.

WELL, THE CLASICO certainly didn’t disappoint. Five minute into his Barcelona debut, Luis Suarez assisted on Neymar’s goal but Real fought back, and a Cristiano Ronaldo penalty was followed by goals from Pepe and Karim Benzema to give Real a thoroughly deserved 3-1 win.

Ola Senors and Senoritas! (Sorry, Spanish isn’t a language I had much time for)

We are a half an hour til kick-off now, although if you are watching on Sky you will have to wait until 5.15 due to those pesky blackout laws.

Anyway, while we wait, here are the teams. And yes, SUAREZ IS BACK!

Suarez is getting ready.

The front three of Neymar, Messi and Suarez is mouth-wateringly good.

And for the gamblers: Real are 6/4, Barca are 7/4 and the draw is 5/2.

Suarez is 7/1 to score first. It feels a little like destiny, doesn’t it?

If you are feeling particularly cheeky, you might even have a punt on a hat-trick at 40/1.

The Barca defence has been insane in La Liga so far this year. Surely they can’t hold Madrid this evening?

Anyone know the answer to this brainteaser?

Interesting stat for Liverpool fans out there..

The benefit of Sky not showing the first 15 minutes is that I get Ray Hudson’s excitable delivery in the meantime.

We are off in El Clasico!

Madrid are setting the tempo early. James is spraying the ball around beautifully.

GOALLL!!!!!! Barcelona 1-0 Real Madrid

Suarez picks out Neymar and the Brazilian cuts inside the defence, takes a few steps into the box before rifling the ball into the bottom corner.

Benzema almost equalises! A lovely ball from Ronaldo plays in the Frenchman and he flicks the ball past Bravo but the ball just trickles wide.

And this is Neymar’s goal. There was a lovely ball from Suarez in the build-up.

Messi has a free kick from just outside the right side of the box but Pepe heads the danger away.

So… Sky’s coverage doesn’t sound great at the moment.

Pique just made a great tackle to disposes Carvajal in the box. Also, Messi has just gotten a booking for a tough tackle.

Marcelo gets all the way down the byline and squares the ball but Benzema made a run to the edge of the six yard and Barca cleared.

My lord! A beautiful ball by Ronaldo is headed off the bar by Benzema who then slams the post with the follow up. What a game so far!

Real are so sharp going forward and they are getting a lot of change out of Barca’s fullbacks.

Now Neymar gets booked for jumping into Pepe. I thought Suarez was meant to be the feisty Barca forward?

Kroos picks up the ball just outside the box and goes for one of his patented shots by Bravo holds it easily.

Barca are coming into the game more now. Xavi is getting on the ball a lot in a central role. Suarez looks just as lively as ever.

Ronaldo has his first shot of the game from the edge of the box out wide on the left, but Bravo holds the ball once again.

Mathieu made a great run up the left but Xavi’s ball is a fraction behind him and the chance is lost.

Benzema has been so dangerous for Madrid so far. Don’t know how it is still 1-0, to be honest.

WHAT A MISS BY MESSI! No joke, this could be the worst miss of his career. Suarez whips a perfect ball across to an unmarked Messi but he can’t convert.

‘Messi’s left foot turned into a jellyfish’ – Ray Hudson on the Messi miss.

Here’s the miss.

Busquets bumps Ronaldo in the box and despite his protestations the ref says play on.

Carvajal just made an excellent sliding block on a Neymar shot after Messi picked out the Brazilian six yards out. Once again, how is this still 1-0?!?

Suarez has been exceptional so far and he and Neymar almost combined well again but the Brazilian misread Suarez’s pass.

Mathieu makes another raiding run up the left wing but Carvajal tackles him beautifully and Barca have a corner.

All aboard the showboat!

Mathieu has been very impressive for Barca. He is always high on the left whenever Messi needs an extra pass but he hasn’t been caught upfield…. yet.

James’ corner is met by Ronaldo and he claims Mathieu handled. The replay backs him up but the ref says no.

PENALTY REAL! Marcelo’s cross is handled by Pique, who gets booked.

GOAL! Real Madrid 1-1 Barcelona

Was there ever any doubt? Ronaldo sends Bravo the wrong way and we are level.

What a game we have here. Marcelo is pressing constantly for Real and just now, Modric thunders into the back of Neymar with a tough challenge and steals the ball. Iniesta gets booked for a foul on the Croatian right after.

Mathieu makes another overlapping run but Neymar gives him a poor pass and his cross is cut out for a corner.

Here is Ronaldo’s penalty.

This is the great Ray Hudson, and this is what he does.

We have had our first lull in the game now, as the pace has dropped with five minutes left in the first half.

What a chance for Real! Marcelo crosses into the box and James is able to slip past the Barca defence unnoticed but he heads an inch wide. An inch.

He really is playing the best football of his career.

HT Real Madrid 1-1 Barcelona

Well that certainly lived up to its billing. All the stars have been great… except when Messi missed an absolute sitter. Suarez got an assist in his first Barcelona appearance and Neymar’s finish was very tidy.

More of the same in the second half please!

It really is a strange experience watching this game with Ray…

755 minutes – that like watching all of those Lord of the Rings movies.

Neymar’s a far more integral part of the Barcelona side this season and it looks like he and Messi have discovered how to mesh well together.

We are off in the second half!

Barca have a free kick in a threatening area after Modric fouls Suarez.

Real Madrid defend well and now break with Marcelo.

Alves copies the run that Mathieu has been making but his threatening cross is dealt with by Pepe.

GOAL! Real Madrid 2-1 Barcelona

Pepe heads home from a Toni Kroos corner and Real have the lead.

A great header by Pepe but this game is far from over. Ivan Rakitic is warming up for Barca. Xavi will probably make way.

Here’s that bullet header from Pepe.

The ball sat up for Kroos for a split second outside the box but he elects to move the ball on instead of unleashing a shot and the chance is lost.

Suarez almost bamboozles Ramos in the box but the defender holds his ground and is able to scramble the ball away.

Barca are piling on the pressure. First, Neymar tries to pull the ball back for Messi but leaves the pass short in the box, and then Casillas produces a brilliant save to deny Mathieu from long range.

A bit of controversy here as Suarez gets a step on Ramos and is hauled back. Suarez looks at the ref but he is unmoved.

Rakitic is on for Xavi for the last half an hour.

GOAL! Real Madrid 3-1 Barcelona

What a goal by the home side! Iniesta gives the ball away in midfield and Isco pushes into Barca territory before feeding Ronaldo, who redirects the ball perfectly to James on the right wing.

The Colombian rolls the ball through to Benzema, who finishes calmly. A great goal but a bad mistake from Iniesta started it all.

It’s a little choppy, but you get the gist.

Real are opening Barca up pretty easily now. Marcelo breaks well and has Benzema ahead of him but elects to pass to Isco and Mascherano makes the block.

Ronaldo just tore away towards the Barcelona goal and just when it looks like he will take the ball all the way to the goal, Alves swoops in from behind and wins the ball. Great tackle by the Brazilian.

Suarez picks Neymar out again with a nice pass but the striker heads over from ten yards out.

Pedro has just come on for Suarez, who played well on his debut.

Ronaldo, Benzema and James break in a pack once again, but Iniesta intercepts his squared ball towards Benzema.

Iniesta just pulled up and Sergi Roberto will replace him. All three subs on now for Barca.

Benzema loves playing against Barcelona.

Messi finds Neymar on the left side of the box but he shoots tamely wide. Besides his goal, Neymar’s shooting has been poor.

Benzema poaches the ball from Pique in the box and rolls it to James on the edge but Mascherano makes a great block to deny the Colombian.

Barca still pressing but they are very open and Real have had a couple of good chances to kill the game off on the break.

Ray Hudson says Real are more dangerous without Bale. What do you all think, should they leave him out when he comes back to full fitness?

Messi takes on Marcelo tight on the the touchline but Casillas easily claims his cross.

Pedro outmuscles Pepe after a ball over the top but the ball runs away from him before he can pull the trigger and the ball is cleared.

Rakitic lines up a shot from just outside the box but Isco hits him with a crunching tackle and wins the ball.

Once again, Real’s front three break away and combine well but Ronaldo’s pass to James on the right wing is cut out.

Isco is off and Illarramendi is on for Real.

The game is petering out now, with Real in total control.

Khedira is on for Benzema now.

Barca are having a lot of possession around the Madrid box at the moment, but the home side defence has been solid.

And now Real use their final sub, with Arbeloa coming on for Modric.

Madrid had a four on one just there but Marcelo’s touch lets him down and Barcelona have the ball back.

We are into injury-time here and the Real crowd are in raptures.

Messi skies a free kick and that should be that.

FT Real Madrid 3-1 Barcelona

Ronaldo picks up a booking for a little kick on Alves and the ref blows it up.
