'I am ashamed': Riverdale actor apologises for posting a series of fat-shaming tweets

‘What I posted was immature, offensive and inappropriate.’

IN 2011 AND 2012, Charles Melton appeared to use his Twitter platform to sporadically  body-shame members of the public.

And in recent days, the Riverdale star’s tweets have resurfaced after fans of the show shared screenshots on their own social media platforms.

Understandably, backlash was swift, and an apology on the part of Melton, who plays Reggie Mantle, even swifter.

Issuing a statement to E! News, the now 27-year-old actor expressed regret over the sentiments expressed on his Twitter page, and apologised to anyone who was offended by his thoughts on ‘fat kids’, ‘fat chicks’ and ‘fat people’.

And just for context, these are the kind of remarks we’re dealing with.

Fat chicks need to understand that wearing yoga pants is a privilege, not a right.
Don’t tease fat kids, they already have enough on their plates.
Headed to the gym. Word of wisdom for the day…if you’re fat…don’t look in the mirror.

The actor, who replaced Ross Butler in the role of Reggie in season 2 of the hit show, said he is ashamed of his past actions.

I’m truly sorry for making inconsiderate comments several years ago and apologize to anyone I hurt. What I posted and said was immature, offensive and inappropriate. I am ashamed of how I acted and there is no excuse for that behavior.

He’s also keen to help others who may currently hold the views he once expressed.

I’m striving to do better and will use this experience to grow, helping others to understand how these types of statements are completely unacceptable.

Charles Melton’s Twitter is now private.
