DID YOU EVER get a niggling feeling in the back of your head that Sam Smith’s Stay With Me sounded a little bit like something else?

Tom Petty did. The track sounds an awful lot like a single of his, I Won’t Back Down.

The Sun reports that following a claim over the similarities of the track settled out of court in October of last year, Smith must now pay a share of royalties to Petty and co-author Jeff Lynne.

Both are now listed as co-writers of the song.

It is reported that Sam Smith wasn’t too put out by the whole experience, with a statement from his representatives saying ‘all involved came to an immediate and amicable agreement’, but that Smith didn’t actually know Petty’s 1989 single.

The statement called it “a complete coincidence”.
