THE RNLI OFTEN get some unusual call outs, but this week Wicklow RNLI inshore lifeboat was called to the rescue of… a sheep in trouble.
The lifeboat team were tasked at 3pm on Wednesday afternoon to a sheep that had become trapped in a cave.
Drowning
The waters were rising and the sheep was in danger of drowning if the rescue team didn’t act fast.
The farmer who owned the sheep had already made two attempts to recover the sheep but he was unable to get down the rocks safely, so the lifeboat crew were asked if they could help.
The lifeboat team were quickly at the scene at 3.35pm at Mizen Head south of Brittas Bay beach.
However, unlike most people that want to be rescued, the sheep was understandably scared and continually ran away from the crew as they tried to get it into the boat.
The crew successfully retrieved the animal from the cave and after a bit of manoeuvring, managed to the get the sheep into the lifeboat.
The sheep, who was uninjured, enjoyed a short trip on the sea waves after being reunited with its owner a short time later on a nearby beach.
A happy ending for both sheep and farmer.
