6 really cool (and easy) science experiments you can test out at home

Put them to the test.

WE MAY HAVE hated it in school, but as adults, we can all recognise that science is pretty awesome – in the most literal sense of the word.

But luckily, it’s not too late to rediscover some of the cooler parts of science that your old Biology teacher might have skipped over during Leaving Cert prep. These experiments are fun, perfect for kids (or just for curious big kids), and each one can be done at home with household ingredients.

Eureka – let’s go…

1. Explosive lunch

This experiment uses water, vinegar and baking soda to make an exploding lunch bag. Kids will absolutely love this one – but do it outside in the garden unless you fancy sticky clean-up afterwards. (PS, this video is narrated by a kid who calls himself “the small fry scientist”. N’aww.)

2. Cloud nine

We know – we know. There are enough clouds in Ireland without adding to matters. But bear with us, because this experiment is really cool. Using items you’ll defo have shoved at the back of a cupboard, like a bicycle pump and rubbing alcohol, you can magic up a cloud from water vapour in a bottle. Your own personal cloud. Isn’t science fun?

3.  Bottling it up

Homemade lava lamp? Don’t mind if we do…

Here’s how it’s done:

4. Eggsellent stuff

This experiment turns a normal egg into a bouncy rubber ball – using vinegar, also known as acetic acid, which dissolves the calcium carbonate of the egg shell. Now that the brainiac stuff is out of the way, check out how cool it looks:

5. Bend it like Beckham

Bend water? It’s not as Uri Gellar pie in the sky as you think – all you need is to generate a bit of static electricity using your own head of hair and a comb.

6. Forever blowing bubbles

This one is super easy and will absolutely astound any kids in your life (or particularly credulous adults, for that  matter). Just tell them the cotton glove is a magic glove that means you can catch bubbles and watch their eyes widen. A really lovely trick/experiment for the young ones to join in with easily.

And there’s one more test you can try out yourself at home. You see, SPAR’s Own Brand range offers great value across a wide range of quality products. And since we’re sure that our own stuff is just as good as the rest – if not better – we want you to put it to the test. Try out SPAR’s range for yourself at home. You won’t be disappointed. #TreeTest
