A MAYO STUDENT has been chosen as the overall top prize winner of this year’s Texaco Children’s Art Competition.
This is the 5th first prize for Shania McDonagh, a student at Mount St. Michael Secondary School, Claremorris.
The 16 year old was a first prize winner in her age categories over the past four years.
Her entry this year, a pencil study entitled ‘Coleman’, follows the style that has made her work so successful.
The chairman of the judging panel Professor Declan McGonagle said:
Her work has established her as one of the most talented artists of her generation, and one whose skill could see her become one of Ireland’s foremost portrait artists of the future.
Shania fought off competition from thousands of young students from across Ireland who took part in the Competition.
The top 21 winning works will be on exhibition in the Education Gallery at the Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane until Monday 2 June.
Shania McDonagh will be presented with her €1,500 first-prize at the prize giving ceremony in the Royal Hospital Kilmainham next month, all 126 winners will attend.
Also in Category A, second prize was won by Cáitríona McClay from Loreto Community School, Milford, Co. Donegal while third prize was won by Grace Murray from Ursuline College, Sligo.
