THE SONG OF the summer.
It’s a moniker that has been bestowed upon the likes of Get Lucky, Blurred Lines, Call Me Maybe and I Gotta Feeling in previous years.
The song of the summer is typically one that is so ubiquitous and catchy that you can’t escape it, nor do you really want to. It’s the type of song that your Mam will sing along to in the car and that you’ll be dancing to at weddings in years to come.
Last year, we deduced that there wasn’t really one song that could be described as the song of the summer. Sure, there were contenders, but no one tune dominated.
But what about 2015?
Well…
It’s kind of a similar story, isn’t it?
Songs like Cheerleader by OMI, Shut Up and Dance by Walk The Moon and Are You With Me? by Lost Frequencies have consistently dominated the airwaves and the Irish Top 40 alike.
While all are perfectly catchy and likeable, none of them have quite owned the summer.
But might we have a late contender in the mix?
Yesterday, it was announced that The Weeknd’s Can’t Feel My Face charted at #1 on both the Irish Top 40 and the Irish Spotify Chart.
The song, which was initially released in June, has been a massive hit in the United States and topped the Billboard Hot 100.
It’s the Canadian R&B singer’s biggest hit to date and with good reason — it’s a bloody banger and has distinct Michael Jackson vibes.
It’s so popular that Tom Cruise lipsynced to it on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon?
And it’s spawned any number of Vine covers.
