LET’S FACE IT renting in Dublin is a pain in the ass. With average rent in the capital up to €1,822 a month, it’s time we examined what else you could spend your hard-earned money on.
1. 364 Tinder Plus Subscriptions
At €5 a month for a 12 month contract, Tinder Plus allows you to swipe all around the world (which surely makes dating much harder) and allows you unlimited rewinds. If that isn’t enough you could buy 256 Tinder Gold subscriptions for a year which gives you unlimited likes. Find a partner, move in with them almost immediately. It’s a flawless plan.
2. 2 IKEA Beds and mattresses PLUS delivery AND breakfast
You might not be able to afford a house but you could have this lovely double bed with a mattress and delivery for around €644. In fact you could order 2 of each and still have enough change to buy 150 portions of IKEA’s 9 item breakfast. What a bargain.
3. 3,718 heads of lettuce
With doctors always telling us we should have a healthier diet, why not make your rent money go further at Lidl? Here you can buy 3,718 heads of lettuce at 0.49c a pop. Or to keep scurvy at bay, why not purchase 1,840 peaches for 99c each instead? You can’t go wrong with thousands of perishable goods.
4. 3 new iPhones
Need a new phone? Well for the less than the cost of the average rent you could buy 3 64GB iPhone X’s on bill pay for €569 a pop. Not into contracts? No need to worry, you can still get one of these and still have enough change to buy a Samsung Galaxy S8 too.
5. 11 30 day rambler tickets
With news that Dublin bus are trialing 3 new 24 hour bus routes, now is the perfect time to start a life living on the buses. An average monthly rent in Dublin can get you almost a year’s supply of Dublin Bus 30 day rambler tickets. That’s as impressive as it is depressing.
6. 21 pairs of these Miss Piggy heels?
Did you know Schuh did a range of Muppet’s style shoes? Neither did we. However, for the same price as your rent, you can buy 21 pairs of these bad boys.
Alternatively if you prefer a darker side of Miss Piggy, you can get 22 pairs of these lovely heels which feature a very creepy ‘KERMY’ stitching. Perfect for any occasion.
7. 2 trips to Iceland
Have you always wanted to see the Northern Lights in Iceland? Well now is you chance. In fact, if you travel this April you can get flights and a week’s accommodation for one person for around €800. If you love it, you can go again and still have some spending money left over. Get me on the plane!
8. 43 candles from the Pippa collection
Listen we all know that the Brown Thomas home collection has a large degree of notions attached to it. However, if you were so inclined, for the price of a one bed in Dublin, you could have 43 of these Mandarin and Mint candles. That’s your gifts for your mam sorted for at least 15 years.
9. 82 bags of decorative stones
Ok so you may not have anywhere to live but how could you turn down 1,640 kg (2okg a bag) of decorative stones? They come in gorgeous colours like Irish Emerald and Lime-Time and will add that splash of colour to whichever 24 hour bus route you choose to live on. Who knows, get some glue and you could probably build a house out of them.
10. 4555 Freddos
We all know that the only fair and true measurement of how expensive something is is how many Freddos you could buy with the money. 4555 Freddos at 40c each gives you 82 KG of these wonderful chocolate frogs. You’d be insane not to invest.
