Jim O’ the Mill

This pub in Tipperary only opens one night a week and it's the stuff of legend

One to cross off the pint bucket list.

NESTLED IN THE Tipperary village of Upperchurch – to the west of Thurles – lies an unassuming house that also moonlights as one of the best pubs in the country.

It’s called Jim O’ the Mill and it only opens on Thursdays

Where the trad sessions are legendary

Last year, The Irish Times named it the best pub in the country as part of its Barfly column, saying it:

opens only on Thursday nights with a trad session from 9pm, including fiddles, boxes and bodhráns brought along by the locals, and of course singing of the highest quality.

The Tipperary Star says that it only has one beer tap – but you’ll never go thirsty in there

Writing on Instagram, one visitor noted how unique it was to have a pub inside a house:

Last night we went to a trad music kitchen party in this house/pub. It was packed with locals and travellers all on quest for local music and a pint of guinness.
It’s been going for 3 generations every thursday night. Last night we had six fiddles three guitars two accordians one banjo and one drum plus many singers who would each take a turn solo or join in as quiet background to others.

What a night.

There’s good reasons why so many people pack in there on a weekly basis

It’s one of the hidden pub treasures of Ireland

One to cross off the pint bucket list if you’re down that direction, no doubt.
