Vogue has come under fire for saying Zayn and Gigi are 'gender fluid' because they share each other's clothes

“being genderfluid is a identity not a f**king fashion trend”

YESTERDAY, VOGUE MAGAZINE released its August issue featuring pop culture power couple Gigi Hadid and Zayn Malik on the front cover.

Look at them there:

But while the cover is winning praise for its pure aesthetic goodness, it’s the article inside that’s come in for some serious criticism overnight.

It’s headlined: “Gigi Hadid and Zayn Malik Are Part of a New Generation Embracing Gender Fluidity”

And the gender fluidity in the headline appears to be derived from this passage where the couple talk about sharing each other’s clothes:

“I shop in your closet all the time, don’t I?” Hadid, 22, flicks a lock of dyed-green hair out of her boyfriend’s eyes as she poses the question.
“Yeah, but same,” replies Malik, 24. “What was that T-shirt I borrowed the other day?” “The Anna Sui?” asks Hadid.
“Yeah,” Malik says. “I like that shirt. And if it’s tight on me, so what? It doesn’t matter if it was made for a girl.”
Hadid nods vigorously. “Totally. It’s not about gender. It’s about, like, shapes. And what feels good on you that day. And anyway, it’s fun to experiment. . . .”

It was quickly pointed out that gender fluid is about not identifying as having a fixed gender, not sharing your other half’s clothes

And so many people on Twitter have called out the article and the headline given the content of the interview

It’s a redefinition of the term and the kickback has been widespread

The lack of representation of actual gender fluid people is perhaps the most galling
