Your weekend movies: Scary tigers and a cryfest

Cinema trip this weekend? TheJournal.ie brings you snippets from new releases to help you decide where to put your money…

WHICH NEW MOVIE release is worth the price of a cinema ticket this weekend?

We’re here to help you decide just that, with the help of these trailers.

Pitch Perfect

For fans of: Glee, happy endings and smiley variety shows

Avoid if: You like cynicism, hate musicals, enjoy No Diggity in its original form

(PlayTrailers/YouTube)

The plot to this film follows a well-trodded path: Bad girl moves to new school; bad girl struggles to fit in; bad girl meets good girls and drama ensues. Just add some sweet voices, variety clubs and pop music into the mix and you have Pitch Perfect to a tee. Based on the trailer alone, we’d say that Glee fans would lap this up. But those of you who think Glee is a musical abomination definitely won’t be laughing during this comedy.

Life of Pi

For fans of: Weird friendships between man and beast, bright colours, epic movies

Avoid if: The word ‘epic’ brings you out in hives, you’re afraid of tigers, you hate movies about ‘journeys’ and ‘discoveries’

(joblomovienetwork/YouTube)

Epic. Like, totally epic. This Ang Lee trailer has epic written all over it – huge waves, storms, underwater scenes, scary Bengal tigers – so if it turns out that the film is actually fairly subdued, we’ll be writing to Mr Lee himself.

Based on the novel of the same name by Yann Martel, the hyper-realistic Life of Pi is about a boy who hangs out with an angry tiger, grows his hair long, and spends a whole lot of time reminiscing about his past while stuck at sea. At least, that’s what we think it’s about, based on this dialogue-free trailer.

It’s A Wonderful Life

For fans of: Sentimentality, the magic of Christmas, a good ol’ cry

Avoid if: You’re dead inside

(TrailersEmpire1/YouTube)

New films are thin on the ground right now, so thank the movie gods that we have this Frank Capra-directed classic film from 1946. The Christmas movie to end all Christmas movies, It’s a Wonderful Life is the film you watch when you want to feel all fuzzy and warm inside. Even if you’ve spent the day fighting with siblings, grappling with an unruly Christmas tree, getting stuck in fairy lights, or trying to wrap oddly-shaped presents, watching this James Stewart film while nibbling on Roses will put you into a festive mood right away.

Just make sure to have some tissues handy, because it should really be named It’s a Wonderful Cry(fest).

Some cinemas – like Dublin’s IFI – are showing the film now, but it’s also widely available on DVD.
