Banksy goes to Hollywood: pre-Oscars graffiti appears in LA

The anonymous British graffiti artist is nominated for an Oscar for his first film – and may have hit LA early, it seems.

BRITISH GRAFFITI ARTIST Banksy appears to have arrived in LA early ahead of next week’s Academy Awards, where he is nominated for his film work.

The anonymous guerilla artist – who is nominated for his documentary film ‘Exit Through The Gift Shop’ – is not expected to show his face if he does win the award, but is apparently making the most of his time in LA to raise his profile.

Among the pieces that have materialised on the walls of Los Angeles in the past few days are portraits of a child wielding a machine gun – that shoots crayons, and portraits of a drunken-looking Mickey and Minnie Mouse on some advertising hoardings.

Another piece depicts Peanuts character Charlie Brown smoking a cigarette while apparently pouring petrol all over the adjacent area. Further work took advantage of a yellow smear on one wall, at the end of which a dog has been painted – giving the illusion the dog has broken wind.

The works suggest that new recent portraits outside Anfield in Liverpoold – offering an iconic depiction of Liverpool FC’s caretaker boss and former on-field hero Kenny Dalglish – are not works of the famed artist.
