Cynthia Nixon had the best response to being called an "unqualified lesbian" after announcing New York governor run

A clapback for the ages.

THIS WEEK, CYNTHIA Nixon announced her intentions to run for governor of New York – the natural next step for someone who already has an Emmy, a Grammy and a Tony.

However, she’s been faced with her fair share of nay-sayers – most notably, former New York City Council Speaker Christine Quinn who called her “an unqualified lesbian”.

Quinn has since apologised for attacking Nixon, saying her “identity has no bearing on her gubernatorial candidacy”, and explained that she was “attempting to make a comparison between the two of us” after Nixon “aggressively opposed” her own candidacy in New York despite her progressive credentials.

Nixon, however, was not taking it lying down.

Speaking during a campaign event at the historic Stonewall Inn on Wednesday (March 21), Nixon said: “Yesterday, when I announced my candidacy, one of Gov. Cuomo’s top surrogates dismissed me as an ‘unqualified lesbian’.

And I just want to say tonight that she was technically right. I don’t have my certificate from the Department of Lesbian Affairs. But in my defence, there is a lot of paperwork involved.”

Nixon, who identifies as bisexual, announced on Monday that she is running as a Democrat against Andrew Cuomo.

Nixon will face Cuomo in a primary election at the ballot box in September, with the winning candidate going on to face a Republican challenger in November.
