We don't want to alarm anyone, but Independence Day isn't on telly today

We will not go quietly into the night!

THIS MUST BE some kind of horrific mistake.

Today is the fourth of July.

Not only is it the date on which America annually celebrates its independence by eating hot dogs and watching fireworks, it’s the date on which Ireland traditionally celebrates one of the greatest movies ever made (we said one of the greatest films ever made. We’re not forgetting about you Con Air, don’t worry).

That film is, of course, Independence Day.

It’s got Will Smith.

It’s got Jeff Goldblum.

It’s got a very young Mae Whitman.

It’s got the greatest speech ever committed to film.

And yet, as we cast our eyes towards the telly pages this morning, something seemed amiss.

In what seems like a slight against our very humanity, Independence Day has not been scheduled for broadcast by any of the main channels. We can’t even see it nestling among the listings of the main movie channels. Did we miss it? Have our eyes deceived us?

DailyEdge.ie has reached out to representatives of both RTÉ and TV3, to try to get to the bottom of what could possibly have gone wrong.

A spokesperson for RTÉ told us:

We played it quite recently and only have a limited number of runs so it is too soon to play it today.
Traditionally we haven’t played it on 4th July. It is a good film and we like to play it where it will have the most effect.

Until then, we leave you with this. Godspeed.
