There is an alternative name spelling generator which is absolutely butchering Irish names

We regret to inform you that ‘Syllyan’ is not an acceptable alternative for Cillian.

IRISH NAMES AREN’T always the easiest names to pronounce or spell. If you haven’t grown up here or have an Irish connections then names like Siobhan or Niamh or Tadgh send shivers down your spine.

However, this name baby name generator on Best Little Baby  isn’t really helping matters as Twitter user Aisling (@aisghair) found out when she looked for alternative ways to spell her name.

I mean some of these are just terrible. Aeslinng? Aeslyng? WHO IS PUTTING Y’S IN AISLING FOR CHRIST SAKE?

So that got us thinking, what other Irish names could this website butcher?

Ok so not too bad with Niamh. At least they haven’t attempted to stick a V in there. They’re mad about the Y’s though.

So there’s a number of problems here. Firstly ‘Oysin’ sounds nothing like Oisin although admittedly I did leave out the fadas when checking. ‘Oyson’ sounds like an indie band name from the mid 2000s while ‘Oisin’ is not an alternate spelling so that’s out.

We know that Saoirse can challenge a lot of people but putting a Z in there is absolutely unacceptable. They don’t even sound the same?

I would simply describe this as a case of a seriously unnecessary amount of N’s. You could even call it notions if you wanted to.

This website is just obsessed with adding extra n’s or extra y’s and I have a simple question. WHY?

Source: Best Little Baby

Two things here. Firstly whoever suggested Konor can get in the sea. Secondly I would like a Katy Perry cover of ‘You’re going to hear me Connoaaaaaaaaaaaaaar’. For the craic like.

Fionnuala was always going to be a name with a lot of potential by my god, Fionnualas all over the country are shuddering at the sight of the y’s and the ps.

Liam is a simple one but that name looks more like ‘Lime’ than anything else.

Tragedy, thy name is Orlaith. I’m not even sure where to begin. ‘Oarlaeth’ is somehow even more of a mouthful to pronounce as is ‘Oarllaith’ and ‘Oarlayth’. We give up.

How different would Cillian Murphy’s career have been if he called himself ‘Cyllyann Murphy’ instead? Nobody would be able to pronounce it. Syllyan is also just a different name entirely.

Rachel is not an Irish name obviously (it’s Hebrew) but I wanted to check if it was just butchering Irish names. The results were not good, not good AT ALL.

Racheil is unacceptable as is ‘Rachayl’ and ‘Rachal’. Rachel is the only true spelling of my name and this is the hill I’m choosing to die on.
