POPULAR WEATHER FORECASTER Jean Byrne has won a European award for her broadcasting style.

Byrne, from Tarbert in Co Kerry, has won the European Meteorological Society’s (EMS) TV Weather Forecast Award for 2011 and will be presented with the accolade at the EMS Media awards in Berlin tomorrow.

Byrne, who has worked with Mét Eireann as a meteorologist since 1989, has been awarded the honour in recognition of a particular TV broadcast that was submitted for consideration.

She is a regular on RTÉ television’s weather broadcasts.

It’s the first time an Irish weather broadcaster has won this award and her colleague Gerry Fleming congratulated her on the honour saying the panel had been “looking for combination of good science and good presentation,” which Byrne had demonstrated.

Byrne was not available for comment but it is not the first time she has hit the headlines.

Earlier this year she wore a slashed ‘spiderweb’ dress which caused a storm on Twitter and led to her name trending in Dublin.

She later discussed her reputation as a fashion icon and ‘That Dress’ in this video:
