Lord Mayor of Dublin With A Big Scary Spear of the Day

ANDREW MONTAGUE’S TIME as the 342nd  Lord Mayor of Dublin will come to an end this evening at a meeting of the Dublin City Council but before he leaves office he had time to get to grips with this serious spear.

Performing the five centuries old tradition of ‘Casting the Spear’ at Dublin Port today, Montague – whose role includes being the Honorary Admiral at Dublin Port – was joined by the CEO of Dublin Port Eamon O’Reilly who was staying a safe distance back:

The tradition of ‘Casting the Spear’ dates back to 1488 when the then Lord Mayor Thomas Mayler set out on his horse to ride the boundaries of the city.

Records state that he rode out onto the strand and cast a spear to mark the city’s boundary. Ever since then the Lord Mayor of Dublin has re-enacted the medieval ceremony and relished it by the looks of Montague:
