11 reasons why Marty Whelan is a national treasure

LET’S TAKE A moment to appreciate the owner of Ireland’s favourite moustache, Marty Whelan, shall we?

1. First things first, he has turned Eurovision commentary into an art

Irish people might not much reason to tune in to the Eurovision anymore given our lacklustre performances in recent years, but it’s still worth watching for Marty’s scathing commentary.

See? Priceless.

2. And he’s never anything short of exuberant on Winning Streak

Let’s relive that time he shrieked, “LADS!” on the show, shall we?

3. He’s not afraid to don a Santa suit

Now that’s public service broadcasting at its finest.

4. Unlike other celebrities, he’s not afraid to tell the whole, unvarnished truth

A few months ago, Marty Whelan learned that he would not be hosting Dancing with the Stars Ireland, having lost out on the gig to Nicky Byrne and Amanda Byram. (Big mistake, if you ask us.)

He told the Herald that he was disappointed to miss out on the gig and said:

If I had a cat, I would have kicked it, but I have no cat.

5. Unlike other follicly challenged celebs, he has admitted to having a hair transplant

Marty’s like, “Yeah, I got a hair transplant. I look great. So what?”

We applaud your honesty, Marty.

6. Also, we need to talk about that moustache

He’s basically Ireland’s Tom Selleck.

And he knows it.

7. He wasn’t afraid to pull a few poses in Rose of Tralee photoshoots

Here he is looking like he’s about to throw some serious shapes to The Prodigy’s Firestarter.

Not a care in the world about getting grass stains on his suit. What a pro.

8. In fact, we’re fairly sure he was a model in a past life

He just comes alive in front of the camera!

9. His Twitter stream is like a stream of endearingly bad Dad jokes

Oh, Marty.

10.  To his credit, he has never shied away from talking about *that* scooter photo

TheJournal.ie asked Marty about the photo in 2015 and confirmed that there was “no Photoshopping whatsoever”.

It appeared in the RTÉ Guide – a fine publication and indeed as you know the official organ of RTÉ.
It’s done me no harm. And it’s done a lot for cotton suits as we know them.

11. In conclusion, what a legend

Love you, Marty.
