THIS WEEKEND, LOVING, a film about an interracial couple that spent nine years fighting to have their marriage recognised in the United States, hit cinemas in the United States.
The reviews have been nearly universally positive with Limerick actress Ruth Negga (Love/Hate, Preacher, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D) garnering acclaim for her performance as Mildred Loving in the civil rights drama and even generating Oscar buzz.
People Magazine said the film owed most of its power to Negga.
Loving leads us to this triumph quietly, keeping a tight focus on this modest, soft-spoken couple. But it owes most of its power to Negga: Mildred’s heart and soul never stop drawing her back to Virginia, not just to family but to the land (the fields are beautifully photographed).
The New York Times called her “a revelation” and Rolling Stone called her “all kinds of brilliant” and “breathtaking”

Just palling around with Lupita Nyong’o, no big deal
With the glowing notices comes the inevitable Oscar chatter and let’s just say that it looks like Negga is a serious Oscar contender this year
Oscar prediction website Gold Derby currently have Negga at 9/2 to win Best Actress next year putting her just behind Emma Stone and Natalie Portman, who are generating buzz for their performances in La La Land and Jackie, respectively.

If Negga lands an Oscar nomination, it will be the second year in a row Ireland has a Best Actress nominee to shout for. (Saoirse Ronan was nominated for her turn in Brooklyn last year.)
Something tells us Ireland is going to be talking about her non-stop soon enough…
