RUSSIA CLAIMS TO have killed the mastermind behind this summer’s Moscow underground attacks, in which 40 people died.

Magomed-Ali Vagabov died after a shoot-out with police in Dagestan, according to official sources. The so-called “Emir of the Dagestan front” was identified by security forces on Saturday.

Vagabov is thought to be the second-in-command of the Northern Caucasus Islamist movement.

The North Caucasus is within Russia’s territory but is predominantly Muslim, and Chechen militants have been fighting for Sharia law to be applied across the region for many years.

Vagabov is said to have masterminded two coordinated suicide bombings in the Russian capital’s underground during rush hour in March. One of the suicide bombers was reportedly Vagabov’s wife.

TWO PEOPLE WERE KILLED and another two injured in an attack on a hydro-electric power station in Russia early this morning. The two dead men are believed to have been security guards at the Baksan power plant.

The attackers planted explosives in the facility after killing the guards and assaulting two technicians. Four exploded and another device was discovered intact, and defused.

Insurgents from the volatile north Caucasus region have been blamed for the incident. Three generators were put out of action as a result of the explosions, temporarily halting the plant’s operations.

Following the attack, Russia’s president Dmitry Medvedev tweeted: “Security at strategic sites tightened after today’s explosions at the HPP.”

He added that there were no electricity shortages in the area supplied by the station.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.

Today, Foreign Policy listed Russia’s reaction to Chechen militants as one of the five “World’s Worst Counter-terrorism Ideas”. The report refers to Russia’s punishment of militant’s families in an attempt to target insurgents.
