Ruth Negga, Colin Farrell and Sing Street are among this year's Golden Globe nominees

The Irish look set for another exciting awards season.

THERE’S GOING TO be much Irish interest at next year’s Golden Globes Awards with Ruth Negga, Sing Street, Colin Farrell and Caitriona Balfe all receiving nominations this afternoon.

Sing Street, a musical comedy set in 1980s Dublin, is nominated for Best Motion Picture, Comedy or Musical. The film, directed by Once’s John Carney, faces steep competition from the likes of La La Land, Deadpool, Florence Foster Jenkins and 20th Century Women.

In the acting categories, Limerick actress Ruth Negga picked up a nod for her acclaimed performance as Mildred Loving in the civil rights drama Loving, while Colin Farrell secured a nomination for Best Actor in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy for his role in The Lobster.

In the television category, Irish actress Caitriona Balfe was also nominated for Best Actress in a Television Series – Drama for the period drama Outlander. This is Balfe’s second consecutive nomination.

Elsewhere, musical La La Land leads the way with seven nominations including nods for its stars Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling. Manchester By The Sea, Moonlight, Lion, Nocturnal Animals, Hell Or High Water and Hacksaw Ridge were among the other films to score multiple nominations.

Chief Executive of Irish Film Board, James Hickey, congratulated the nominees on their “incredible achievement”.

“Sing Street and The Lobster are supported by the IFB and we are very proud of the teams behind each film,” he said. “John Carney’s Sing Street is filmed in Dublin featuring a host of up-and-coming Irish talent and has brought an Irish story to audiences worldwide with great success. Colin Farrell gives a mesmerising performance in theThe Lobster, a film which has brought images of Kerry around the world. I’m also delighted to see Ruth Negga receive worldwide success with her performance in Loving having begun her career on Irish projects including numerous IFB-funded films and Catriona Balfe for her performance in Outlander.”
