#LoveHate, selfies, and @BrianODriscoll: This was 2014 on Twitter

We did a LOT of tweeting this year.

AS WE NEAR the end of 2014 (we’re in denial too, don’t worry), Twitter is a great way to help us remember all the little moments that made the year in pop culture, sport, and social media.

From selfies to bizarre hashtags, it has catalogued them all for a special dedicated site to 2014.

2014 was the year of the selfie, the Garth Brooks concerts that never were, Brian O’Driscoll’s retirement and the 2014 Football World Cup.

Here’s some of what Twitter discovered when trawling through the year’s biggest tweets:

Year of the Selfie

This past year was most certainly the year of the selfie, with Ellen’s (@EllenDeGeneres)’s Oscars selfie being retweeted more than three million times on Twitter. That made it the most shared message EVER on the site to date. And, of course, it spawned a million copies.

More proof that we love ourselves:

  • Since January 1, the term ‘selfie’ has been mentioned more than 92 million times on Twitter
  • That’s a 500% increase and 12 times more than in 2013

Some memorable selfies include:

Lukas Podolski’s selfies taken as the German team celebrated their World Cup victory

Rory McIlroy’s team selfie from the plane after yet another win:

We’re MAD into TV

What caused the biggest spikes in Ireland Twitter traffic? TV and sport.

  • The moment which caused the biggest spikes was the episode of Love/Hate on 26 October, when Pauley was pushed off a roof by Siobhán. We took to Twitter in our droves to hash(tag) out that one.
  • The second most-tweeted about event was the All Ireland Football semi-final on August 24th between Kerry and Mayo.

#OnlyOnTwitter

There was more sport tweeted about when Ireland defeated France in Paris, winning us the Six Nations for the first time since 2009. We sent more than 210,000 Tweets celebrating the victory throughout Saturday 15 March.

When Brian O’Driscoll (@BrianODriscoll) retired, his fans took to Twitter to tell him how much they cared.

His farewell to Irish rugby was retweeted 39,000 times:
