Dara Ó Briain called out BBC News for this map that appeared to put Ireland outside the EU

*taps mic*: “lads, we’re still in the EU”

ON TOP OF being a well-known TV presenter and comedian in Britain, Dara Ó Briain often serves as an unofficial teacher of Irish nuance to those across the water – like the time he explained why we have two Taytos.

So, it’s natural that people would get in touch with him if they see something amiss – just like @rachelmarsmy did when she was watching the BBC News last night:

“Hi Dara, Can you tell the BBC next time you’re in there that Ireland is still in the EU, thanks!”

The map *appears* to show the EU countries in red, with Ireland being lumped in with the UK as a country outside the union

daraob @rachelmarsmy @rachelmarsmy

So Dara did his best to spread the word by calling them out on an error that’s made far too often

ffs @daraobriain @daraobriain

People underneath his tweet speculated that the map might have represented the Schengen Area – but it didn’t add up given, for example, Switzerland, Iceland and Norway are in the area but left grey on the map. Another theory was that the map was there to represent the EU members that were likely to want to play hardball in the negotiations.

It’s a touchy subject when it comes to Irish maps and Brexit – as The Guardian found out with its front page earlier this year

Goodbye Donegal, Leitrim, Cavan, Dundalk.

People weren’t best pleased with the recent BBC News example

Some labelling might have helped the situation

It’s been… fixed though

Sure lump a load of pink on the whole island, that’ll clear things up nicely.
