Remix na bhFiann

5 musical reasons Amhrán na bhFiann should not be remixed

It really, really shouldn’t.

UNTIL RECENTLY, THE copyright for Ireland’s national anthem was held by the Department of Finance, but in December 2012 it expired which leaves it open for widespread use and general mischief.

Yes, that’s right, it is open to be remixed, club schtyley.

We’ve done some preliminary research into what that might sound like. Here are three examples which indicate that it’s best if  the classics of Irish life are not brought up to date via the medium of dance music.

The Fields of Athenry

Versions of this song are ten a penny, but the dance remixes are frankly, abhorrent.

I’ll Tell Me Ma

Somewhat acceptable in the traditional form, this Irish standard is an offense to the ears when a synth gets thrown into the mix.

Irish Dancing

These lads can certainly bust a move, but we can’t help but wonder if all that sand would be really bad for their hard shoes?

Liveline

There is however, one version of a song which makes a strong case for the remix.

Ladies and gentlemen, it’s Daithi’s Liveline (lolz mix).

In Conclusion

Remixing Irish classics is dangerous territory.  Surely this should be as bad as it gets for Amhrán na bhFiann?
