isn't it ironic...

ABORTION IS A hard topic to discuss and not always one that’s going to make people laugh for obvious reasons. However, there is a way of talking about the subject and managing to make it funny.

Australian comedian Jim Jefferies decided to take a crack at it by devoting a segment of his Comedy Central show to abortion and in particular Ireland’s strict laws.

Because there’s nothing that women love more then men discussing what they should be allowed do with their bodies.

Jefferies is a long time friend of comedian and activist Tara Flynn who appeared in the segment to talk about her story and the impact that the 8th Amendment has had on pregnant people in Ireland. As we all know anyone who is found to have procured an abortion in Ireland can face up to 14 years in prison.

Jefferies and Flynn discuss the 8th Amendment and as Jefferies points out ‘on the bright side, the foetus can’t get an abortion either’ to which Flynn counters with ‘but they can get a team of lawyers’. One wonders how the firm Foetus, Foetus, Foetus and Foetus will make money if the 8th is repealed.

Jefferies wanted to hear both sides of the argument so decided he wanted to interview leader of the National Party and anti-abortion campaigner Justin Barrett. He’s probably best known for founding the ‘Abortion Never’ campaign.

Barrett has been pretty outspoken calling anyone who procures an abortion a ‘baby killer’ and saying they should face 14 years in prison while the doctor who performs the abortion should be put to the death. A reasonable bloke so. Jefferies decided he had to interview him but had a pretty clever idea of how to do so.

I’m in the Dublin, home of anti abortion advocate Justin Barrett. It’d be very convenient for Mr Barrett if I interviewed him here but I thought no, let’s make him fly to London so he has to endure the same kind of bullshit that every Irish woman has to go through if they want an abortion.

So that’s exactly what he did. Barrett flew to London to meet Jefferies and took a very long taxi ride with a very annoying passenger to make the trip as uncomfortable as possible so that Barrett might understand a smidgen of what 12 people a day go through trying to get a basic medical procedure.

The subsequent interview is quite funny with Jefferies trying to keep a straight face as Barrett makes extreme statements such claiming that people who are getting abortions to coincide with their holiday plans. Nothing quite like a trip to Ibiza to let the hair down and get that abortion you’ve been waiting for while you’re at it!

The whole segment is well worth watching and Jefferies does a pretty good of making a serious segment on abortion but also managing to get a few laughs in their and I think we can all agree when he says ‘Justin, on behalf of the women of Ireland, enjoy your flight home’.
